Recovery scams: the second fraud
Whoever appears afterwards promising to recover what you lost.
How it works
Weeks or months after the fraud, someone appears claiming they can recover the money. They ask for an upfront payment for fees, filings or taxes, and disappear.
Unmistakable signs
- They guarantee recovery. Nobody can, ourselves included.
- They ask for money before seeing a single document.
- They contacted you, not the other way round.
- They say you appear on a list of victims.
- They rush you with a deadline.
What to do
Pay nothing. Keep the contact and the messages: they document the second attempt and often reveal something about the first.
